Separation anxiety training with a certified trainer is sold by the month. One US practice charges $720 a month, about $2,160 for the first three months, and plans on around six months in all, with five at monthly rates and check-ins after that. A veterinary behaviorist's first consultation costs $595 to $605 at two US services, and UK behaviorists publish £365 to £765 for a consultation package. Why separation anxiety is priced differently from ordinary dog training
Most dog training is sold in sessions because most dog training teaches a behavior. Separation anxiety is a panic response to being alone. The treatment is a graduated exposure protocol that runs daily for weeks.
The ASPCA's own protocol makes the shape of this clear. Over weeks of conditioning you add "only a few seconds each session, or every couple of sessions" until your dog manages 40 minutes. Once it can be alone for 90 minutes without getting upset, it "can probably handle four to eight hours". The ASPCA says the whole process can be done "within a few weeks", but only with several sessions a day at weekends and two a day in the working week (ASPCA). That is the unit of work a trainer is pricing. It means reviewing your sessions, rewriting the plan as your dog progresses, and answering a message when a session goes wrong on a Tuesday night. So when you see a price, check what unit it covers, because "per hour" and "per month" are not comparable numbers.

That last row needs a note. A general class is good value for the things an hour a week can fix. Separation anxiety is not one of them, because nothing useful happens inside the hour you are both standing in the room. If a trainer proposes to fix it in three sessions, ask what happens between sessions. The answer tells you whether they treat this condition.

Credentials, and what the letters mean
Prices track credentials more closely than they track results, so it helps to know what you are paying for.
CSAT is a specialist qualification specific to separation anxiety. The certification program runs 15 weeks with "over 150 hours of structured learning", and admission is selective (Malena DeMartini). It is a training credential, so no CSAT can prescribe.
Veterinary behaviorist means a licensed vet with a behavior specialization. They can investigate medical causes and prescribe. This matters more than owners expect, because pain and urinary conditions produce behavior that looks like separation anxiety and does not respond to training.
Clinical Animal Behaviourist in the UK: the Animal Behaviour and Training Council sets the standards and keeps the national register of assessed practitioners (ABTC). Some insurers include behavioral cover (RSPCA). If you have pet insurance, ask what paperwork it needs before you book anything.
One filter applies at every price point. AVSAB recommends "only reward-based training methods", including for behavior problems, and says an appropriate trainer should avoid choke chains, prong collars and electronic shock collars, because the documented fallout of aversive methods includes "increased anxiety and fear-related aggression" (AVSAB, 2021). For a dog that is already panicking, the point is practical. Suppressing the noise does not treat the panic, and it removes the signal you need to measure progress.
What is not in the price
This is the part that makes the project cost more than the training invoice, and few price pages mention it.

Cover for the hours you cannot be home. The ASPCA is blunt: during treatment "your dog cannot be left alone except during your desensitization sessions" (ASPCA). For a dog whose threshold is 30 seconds and an owner who works in an office, that means a sitter, daycare, a neighbor, or a rearranged schedule for several weeks. One Denver daycare charges $44 for a full day, or $42 a day in a ten-day pack (The Big Backyard), and a New Hampshire humane society charges $20 (Monadnock Humane Society). Twelve weeks of weekday daycare at the Denver pack rate comes to $2,520, more than the first three months of CSAT fees. Budget for it before you start, because this is where most programs stall.
A vet visit. The ASPCA asks you to see your vet "to rule out medical issues" before behavior modification, and AVSAB says dogs with serious problems such as separation anxiety "should always be evaluated by a veterinarian" (AVSAB, 2021). At one nonprofit clinic in Florida a physical exam is $55 before any tests (SPCA Florida). Skipping it risks paying for weeks of training for a urinary tract infection.

Is a trainer worth it?
Sometimes clearly yes.
Pay for a professional if your dog injures itself trying to get out, will not eat for a day or more, or escapes the house. The same goes if you have already tried and stalled, or if you are not going to keep a log on your own. That last reason is no moral failing. It is a realistic prediction about your next few months, and a paid human who reads your log several times a week is a good way to solve it.
The honest counter-case: the protocol itself is public. The ASPCA publishes it, while also saying these techniques "require the guidance of a trained and experienced professional". What you buy from a trainer is judgment about your specific dog, and accountability. If your dog's threshold is already a few minutes rather than a few seconds, and you will genuinely do the daily reps, a cheaper route can get you there.
Cheaper routes that work
Online courses. The main ones are built by separation anxiety specialists and cost a fraction of one-to-one work. You supply the discipline.
Sliding scale and charity support. Ask directly. At least one CSAT practice reserves two reduced-fee slots a month (A Canine Affinity). In the US, Oregon Humane runs a free pet behavior help line (Oregon Humane), and your local shelter may offer something similar. In the UK, the RSPCA's cost-of-living guidance points to Dogs Trust's free Behaviour Support Line (RSPCA).
Do it yourself with structure. DIY rarely fails for lack of method. It fails on the bookkeeping. The protocol asks you to record every session, compare it to the last one, and decide whether to add seconds or step back. Miss a week of that and you lose the thread.

FAQ
Is separation anxiety training covered by pet insurance? Sometimes. Some insurers include behavioral support, and UK behaviorists such as The Behaviour Clinic list insurance liaison and vet referral forms as part of the package. In the US, policies differ, so ask your insurer whether behavioral treatment is covered, and whether it needs a vet diagnosis, before you book.
Why do trainers not publish their prices? Many don't, because the real answer is a range that depends on how long treatment runs, as the practices above say directly. That means comparison shopping takes phone calls. Ask for the monthly rate and the expected number of months, then multiply.
How many weeks will I pay for? There is no fixed number.
